Understanding her sister more than anyone, Sarah knew Mary had found the right man. She felt Mary had never been really at ease with any of her other boyfriends, but she was completely herself with Christopher. The relationship had developed so rapidly that Winston and Clementine had not met him yet, but Sarah immediately wrote to reassure them. She told them, ‘He loves her the way we love her, and for the truly lovable and unique qualities we know her to possess.’39

Sarah was at a crossroads in her love life, too. While Mary and Christopher were in Rome, Gil paid her a flying visit. Inevitably, she must have compared the two very different relationships. She told her parents that she was more concerned about her younger sister’s happiness than her own. She believed Mary deserved ‘real happiness’ because she could ‘surrender her heart and life to one man’. Sarah knew she could never do that. This defining moment highlighted how close, but different, the two sisters were. Sarah wrote, ‘It is an enormous joy for us to be together – for we love each other dearly – and across a difference of age and temperament, as sharply defined as sunlight and shadow, we understand each other.’40

In November, Christopher finally met Winston and Clementine for the first time. He described his impressions in a heartfelt thank-you letter to his future father-in-law:

Lunch at Chartwell was for me, such a great awakening. Please believe me when I say that I had the impression of living for an all-too-short period of time in another world – a world of greatness such as I never believed existed.41
